The Kanmon Strait is barely 700 metres wide at its narrowest point — but in 1945, this is where the Pacific War was quietly sealed. US B-29s mined the passage so densely under Operation Starvation that Japanese shipping all but collapsed, a campaign that did more to force Japan’s surrender than the better-known firebombing of its cities, as some historians argue.
